Adjustments are ‘changes, supports or modifications that can be made to enable all students to learn and demonstrate: what they know and what they can do with what they know.’ Inclusive education aims to provide success for all students in the mainstream classroom.
To value diversity by understanding that every student can learn; every student should be provided with access to the curriculum. YPB specialises in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other neurological disorders. These differences can be diagnosed at any age, they are described as developmental disorders because symptoms generally appear in the early years of life. People of all genders, races, ethnicities, and economic backgrounds can be diagnosed with ASD, a lifelong disorder; treatments and services can improve a person’s symptoms and daily functioning. YPB will ensure that staff adequately understand ASD and other co-occurring behaviours.
To challenge and change the way one perceives education for students who think and act differently, to ensure that all schools can provide access to high-quality education and intervention for all students to achieve their personal best.
At the national level, policy supporting inclusivity and diversity is documented in the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA, 1992) and the Disability Standards for Education (DSfE, 2005). The DSfE (2005) was devised under the DDA (1992) to provide a framework to ensure all students with a disability have equitable access to learning alongside their typically developing peers. The professional learning offered by YPB aligns with the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership [AITSL], 2013), which require all educationalists to develop their skills in the area of differentiation and inclusion for the diversity of all students. YPB acknowledges and utilises the framework from the National Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
